House of Representatives Indicts NAHCON Over Alleged Mismanagement of ₦90 Billion Hajj Subsidy

The House of Representatives has indicted the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) over alleged mismanagement of ₦90 billion in federal subsidies allocated for the 2024 Hajj operations. An ad hoc committee's investigation revealed significant infractions, including substandard accommodation for Nigerian pilgrims in Mina and Arafat.

In response to these findings, the House has called for anti-graft agencies and the Office of the Auditor-General for the Federation to conduct a comprehensive external audit of NAHCON's financial records. The investigation aims to scrutinize the commission's claim of sponsoring 1,000 officials using the subsidy funds.

Furthermore, the House has directed NAHCON to publish a detailed breakdown of all Hajj charges to ensure transparency and prevent hidden fees. Recommendations also include renegotiating the Bilateral Air Agreement favoring Saudi-owned airlines over domestic carriers, and decentralizing accommodation management by involving State Pilgrims Welfare Boards and private tour operators in price negotiations.

These measures are part of broader efforts to enhance the efficiency and transparency of Hajj operations in Nigeria.
