On April 7, 2025, officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) reportedly assaulted two brothers, identified as Alex and Victor Emmanuel, along with their mother, Mrs. Grace Emmanuel, in Abuja for wearing 'RevolutionNow' berets. The incident occurred near the Gudu District as the family was returning from a market.
According to eyewitnesses, the NSCDC officers confronted the Emmanuel family, demanding the removal of their berets associated with the 'RevolutionNow' movement. When the family questioned the legality of the order, the officers allegedly resorted to physical violence, using batons to beat them. Passersby who attempted to intervene were reportedly threatened with arrest.
Following the assault, the Emmanuel family sought medical attention at a nearby clinic but were allegedly denied treatment due to the absence of a police report. Human rights organizations have condemned the actions of the NSCDC officers, calling for an immediate investigation and accountability. Amnesty International Nigeria stated, "The brutalization of citizens for expressing their views is a gross violation of human rights and must be addressed promptly."
The NSCDC has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident. This event has intensified concerns about freedom of expression and the conduct of security agencies in Nigeria.
