On May 1, 2025, thousands of ride-hailing drivers across Lagos, Nigeria, plan to stage a 24-hour shutdown of services on platforms including Uber, Bolt, and inDrive. Organized by the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), the protest aims to highlight grievances over poor wages, unjust deactivations, insecurity, and exploitative work policies.
AUATON's Lagos chapter spokesperson, Steven Iwindoye, stated that the protest is a response to the companies' alleged disregard for drivers' welfare and repeated failures to address concerns through dialogue. The union seeks fair compensation, safer working conditions, and respect for drivers' rights.
The planned protest aligns with International Workers' Day, emphasizing the drivers' demand for better treatment and labor conditions. AUATON has indicated that the shutdown is just the beginning, with plans to follow up with clear demands and structured negotiations.
