Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for a thorough and impartial investigation into allegations of sexual harassment made against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. In a statement released on February 28, 2025, Atiku emphasized the seriousness of the claims and the necessity for transparency in addressing them.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, alleged that during a visit to Akpabio's residence in Uyo on December 8, 2023, he made inappropriate advances towards her in the presence of her husband. She further claimed that Akpabio insinuated she should "take care of him" to ensure favorable consideration of her motions in the Senate.
Atiku underscored the importance of integrity within the Nigerian Senate, stating that its members, particularly those in leadership positions, must uphold the highest standards of dignity and respect. He highlighted that sexual harassment in the workplace poses a significant barrier to women's advancement and, by extension, the nation's progress.
He urged President Bola Tinubu and the Senate to ensure a credible, transparent, and independent investigation into the allegations, noting that the handling of this matter would reflect Nigeria's commitment to justice, accountability, and the inclusion of women in governance.
In response, Ekaette Akpabio, the wife of the Senate President, defended her husband, describing him as disciplined and jovial, and threatened legal action against Akpoti-Uduaghan for maligning his character.
As of now, there has been no official response from Senate President Akpabio regarding these allegations.
