This historic work is aimed at bridging the gap between science and indigenous African languages, demonstrating that complex academic subjects can be effectively taught in one's native tongue. Okoro's vision behind "Fiziksi" was to promote the idea that students will better comprehend scientific concepts when taught in their mother tongue.
The book received widespread praise from academics and language enthusiasts alike, though it also sparked debate. In addition to this, Okoro has often spoken out against the marginalization of African languages in educational systems, emphasizing that indigenous languages should be embraced in schools, universities, and academic research. New Book: "Understanding the Igbo Culture of Nigeria"
In a remarkable follow-up to his groundbreaking work in the realm of Igbo language and education, Maazi Ogbonnaya Okoro has published his first book in English titled "Understanding the Igbo Culture of Nigeria." Released in America, this marks an important milestone in Okoro’s literary journey, just a year after his groundbreaking publication of "Fiziksi" — the first-ever Physics textbook written in an African language (Igbo).
Overview of the Book

"Understanding the Igbo Culture of Nigeria" is a comprehensive exploration of the Igbo people's cultural heritage, detailing their diverse traditions, history, and way of life. Okoro’s book fills a critical gap in the documentation of authentic Igbo culture and oral traditions, which have long been neglected or lost over time. The book is particularly significant in that it revives many Igbo traditions that have gone extinct, preserving them for future generations.
The idea behind the book stems from Okoro’s decades of experience traveling around Igbo land and conducting extensive research on the various traditions of the Igbo people. The work delves deep into the cultural fabric of the Igbo, offering insights into historical events, spiritual practices, social structures, and the political evolution of the Igbo community.
One of the key features of the book is its accessibility — it is written in a style that even an uneducated person can comprehend. Okoro addresses both the historical and cultural context of the Igbo, explaining vital aspects of the culture in a manner that is straightforward and engaging.
In a heartfelt post on his social media, Okoro expressed his excitement about the book’s release:
"My first ever published book in English and my first book written in America, IS OUT! It is published in America, just a year after first physics in African language (Igbo) was published by me. The title is, ‘Understanding the Igbo Culture of Nigeria.’

This book is unique and its contents fill the gap of resources lacking in the documentation of the authentic culture of the Igbo and oral traditions. The book contains twenty chapters narratively expressing the Igbo culture and diverse traditions handed down by our ancestors.
There are many traditions gone extinct that this book revives and preserves for this generation and generations to come. The idea is borne out of my decades of experience in traveling around Igbo land and researching various traditions of our ancestors. Many Igbo don’t even know anymore what really is Igbo culture. The solution is here. The book is written in a certain way even an uneducated person can comprehend it.
It gives a historical background of Nigeria: precolonialism, slave trade, colonialism, post-colonialism, the Igbo and other vital introductory remarks that would make foreigners understand the political and historical landscape of Nigeria and the Igbo.
I hope the Igbo home and abroad, non-Igbo, scholars, and everyone will find this resource useful in understanding the Igbo culture of Nigeria.
