The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the governors of Bauchi, Katsina, Kano, and Kebbi states, demanding the immediate reversal of their decision to close schools for five weeks during the upcoming Ramadan fast. NANS warns that failure to comply will result in nationwide protests.

NANS argues that the prolonged closure infringes upon students' rights to uninterrupted education and could adversely affect academic progress. The association emphasizes that such a policy discriminates against students of other faiths and sets a concerning precedent for religious-based school closures.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and various unions have also expressed strong opposition to the closures, labeling them as discriminatory and detrimental to the educational system. They caution that such actions could deepen religious divides and disrupt societal harmony.

In response to the backlash, the Middle Belt Forum has criticized the decision, urging the affected states to reconsider and prioritize students' educational needs over extended religious observances.

As the 72-hour deadline approaches, all eyes are on the governors of the implicated states to see if they will revoke the school closure directive or face widespread demonstrations led by NANS.
