In a startling shift in U.S. trade policy, President Donald Trump announced on July 7, 2025 that any country “aligning themselves with the Anti‑American policies of BRICS” would face an additional 10 % tariff on top of existing import duties. He made the declaration in a post on Truth Social, emphasising, “There will be no exceptions to this policy!”.
Nigeria, recently elevated to BRICS partner status alongside Egypt, Ethiopia, and others, was specifically cited as one of the nations that could be hit by the levy.
The announcement coincides with an ongoing BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, where bloc leaders issued a strong joint statement condemning unilateral tariff actions as inconsistent with WTO standards and potentially harmful to the global economy.
