A High Court in Lafia, Nasarawa State, has sentenced Oluwatimileyin “Timileyin” Ajayi, a gospel singer, to death by hanging for the murder and dismemberment of 24-year-old NYSC member Salome Adaidu. Justice Simon Aboki found him guilty under Section 221 of the Northern Nigeria Penal Code, following a trial that captured national attention.

The conviction stems from the January 12, 2025 killing at Ajayi’s residence in Papalana, New Karshi, where he was later found carrying Adaidu’s severed head and body parts, an act that shocked the nation . During police interrogation, Ajayi admitted to the crime, citing jealousy after accusing Adaidu of infidelity. He expressed no remorse, saying, “I have no regrets”.

The court’s verdict underscores the severity with which Nigerian law treats cases of murder and particularly heinous acts. Following the ruling, Ajayi has 90 days to appeal, after which the Ministry of Justice may recommend the execution of the sentence to the governor.

The victim’s family and the public have hailed the decision as a significant step toward delivering justice and deterring similar atrocities.
