A shocking incident occurred at UBE Oju Centre in Benue State, where a Junior Secondary School 3 (JSS3) student, identified as Friday Ogamude, reportedly beat his teacher, Mr. Oyibe Oyibe, 35, to death over a confiscated cap. The attack allegedly took place on Friday, July 11, 2025, after the teacher, citing school rules, seized the student’s cap earlier in May 2025.

Eyewitnesses recount that Ogamude confronted Mr. Oyibe in a classroom corridor, demanding the return of the cap. The situation rapidly escalated into a violent struggle. Students who witnessed the confrontation say Ogamude struck the teacher several times before the educator collapsed and later died in a nearby hospital.

School administrators have since placed the institution on lockdown while police from the Benue State Command secured the scene. The boy was immediately taken into custody, and the police spokesman confirmed that an investigation has begun.

In response, Benue State’s Ministry of Education has ordered a full inquiry, pledging collaboration with relevant government agencies. Officials expressed deep concern over the rise in violence within schools, calling for urgent reviews of disciplinary practices, mental health support, and conflict resolution training for students.
