The Abuja Geographic Information System (AGIS) official, Mairiga Hassan Shaharu, has been arrested by the police in Abuja. He is accused of leaking information regarding the alleged fraudulent land allocations by Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, to his sons. The arrest follows a series of investigative reports by The Peoples Gazette that exposed the minister's actions.
Shaharu, who works in the Fresh Applications Unit of AGIS, was detained by a team of police detectives on Tuesday afternoon. As of Wednesday morning, his whereabouts remain unknown, raising concerns among his family about his safety and possible mistreatment.
Sources within AGIS suggest that Minister Wike is increasingly paranoid following the publication of the land allocation reports. An official stated, "He's confused and moving fast, which is why he keeps making mistakes."
The allegations against Minister Wike involve the allocation of over 1,700 hectares of land, valued at approximately $2.85 billion, to his son, Jordan Wike, through a company named Jordan Farms and Estates Limited. The company, while registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission, has raised questions due to its close association with the minister's family.
In response to the exposé, President Bola Tinubu ordered an investigation into the matter. However, details of the investigation have not been disclosed, and there are concerns about the potential for a cover-up.
The arrest of Shaharu has sparked outrage among civil society groups and opposition parties, who view it as an attempt to intimidate whistleblowers and suppress accountability. Critics argue that the focus should be on investigating the minister's actions rather than targeting lower-level officials.
As the situation develops, there is growing concern about the erosion of transparency and accountability within the Nigerian government. The international community is closely monitoring the case, urging for a fair and impartial investigation.
