Prince Alwaleed bin Khaled bin Talal, widely dubbed Saudi Arabia’s “Sleeping Prince,” has died at the age of 36 after remaining in a coma for nearly 20 years. The announcement was released by the Royal Court on Saturday, July 19, 2025.
The prince suffered devastating brain injuries in a 2005 car accident in London, where he was training as a military cadet, and never regained full consciousness . Despite occasional involuntary movements—like a finger twitch in 2019—he remained in a persistent vegetative state, cared for at King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh.
His father, Prince Khaled bin Talal, remained steadfast in maintaining life support, often appealing to hope and faith. He wrote on X (formerly Twitter):
“With hearts believing in Allah’s will… we mourn our beloved son… May Allah have mercy on him.”
Public grief has spread across Saudi Arabia and the Arab world, with tributes recalling a story of endurance, parental devotion, and spiritual hope.
