In a sweeping policy move, President Donald Trump’s administration has officially shut down the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)—dissolving it into the State Department and laying off over 90% of its staff—a decision fueled by a Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) report alleging the agency harbored “radical-left bias, fraud and inefficiency”.
This drastic restructuring comes on the heels of inflammatory accusations by Republican Rep. Scott Perry, who claimed that USAID funds may have indirectly sponsored Boko Haram in Nigeria, prompting the Nigerian Senate to summon top security chiefs—including the NSA, DSS, NIA, and DIA heads—for a formal inquiry.
U.S. Ambassador Richard Mills has vehemently denied the allegations, stating there is “no evidence” that USAID financed terrorist groups and affirming the agency’s robust monitoring systems ensure aid reaches intended recipients
