The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has published the results for the 2024 Second Series of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates. The announcement was made on Sunday in a statement by Moyosola Adesina, Acting Head of Public Affairs at WAEC.
Performance Breakdown
A total of 68,342 candidates registered for the exam, reflecting a 20% drop from last year’s figures. Out of these, 65,023 individuals sat for the test in 5,067 examination centers nationwide. Among them were 157 candidates with special needs, including visually impaired and hearing-impaired students, as well as those with albinism.
Results show that 34,878 candidates (53.64%) earned credit passes in at least five subjects, including English and Mathematics. Meanwhile, 43,923 students (67.55%) secured credit passes in five or more subjects, regardless of English and Mathematics.
A gender comparison revealed that 17,992 female candidates (51.58%) met the standard five-credit requirement, slightly outperforming their male counterparts, who recorded 16,886 successful candidates (48.41%).
WAEC emphasized that performance statistics for private candidates differ from those of school candidates, as private students are not required to take a full set of subjects and can register only for those they need to retake.
Withheld and Unprocessed Results
While 95.9% of the results were fully processed and released, 2,669 candidates (4.10%) are still awaiting finalization due to errors linked to them. WAEC assured that efforts are underway to resolve these issues.
Additionally, 2,577 candidates (3.96%) had their results withheld due to suspected malpractice. The council urged affected students to visit its complaints portal for further guidance, stating that all reported cases would be reviewed and decisions made accordingly.
New Hybrid Exam Format Introduced
For the first time, WAEC gave private candidates the option to take the exam either in the traditional paper-and-pen format or a newly introduced computer-based test (CBT). This change, implemented between October 25 and December 20, 2024, signals a move toward digital assessments.
Candidates can now check their results online through WAEC’s official portal and follow up on any issues regarding withheld or unprocessed results.
