Previously, INEC had accepted the petition and moved to the verification stage, aiming to determine if it had the support of more than 50% of the 474,554 registered voters in the district.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rejected the petition to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District. INEC cited that the petition did not meet the constitutional requirements outlined in Section 69(a) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Previously, INEC had accepted the petition and moved to the verification stage, aiming to determine if it had the support of more than 50% of the 474,554 registered voters in the district. However, after a thorough examination, INEC found that only 208,132 signatures were valid, representing 43.86% of registered voters. This number fell short by 29,146 signatures of the required majority needed to proceed with the recall process.

The recall attempt has been surrounded by controversy, with allegations that it was politically motivated, especially considering Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan's outspoken criticism of former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello. Multiple reports indicated that some voters were deceived into signing the recall petition under the pretense of an empowerment program.
