A devastating fire broke out in Onitsha, Anambra State, causing massive destruction and leaving traders and residents in distress. The fire, which started around 6:20 a.m. on Ifejika Street near Sokoto Road, quickly spread to nearby structures, including parts of the famous Onitsha Main Market.

The Anambra State Fire Service responded promptly, with firefighters battling to contain the flames. Chukwudi Chiketa, the Head of Media and Publicity for the Fire Service, assured the public that efforts were underway to control the situation.

This incident comes just days after another fire at Iweka Road near Ochanja Market, where shops and goods worth millions of naira were lost. The recurring market fires have sparked concerns about fire safety measures in the area.

Authorities are yet to determine the cause of the latest fire, but an investigation is ongoing. The Anambra State Police Commissioner, CP Ikioye Orutugu, expressed sympathy for the victims and urged traders to adopt better fire prevention strategies.

Residents and business owners are now calling on the government to enforce stricter fire safety regulations and improve emergency response mechanisms to prevent further tragedies.
