Tragedy struck in Kano State on Tuesday as the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Gwale Division was killed during a violent mob attack on the police station. The incident followed outrage over the reported death of a young man in police custody, which sparked widespread unrest among residents.
Eyewitnesses say the chaos erupted when news filtered out that the detainee — a 22-year-old man allegedly arrested days earlier — had died under suspicious circumstances while in custody. Irate youths, believed to be from the local community, stormed the station in protest, demanding answers and accountability.
The protest quickly descended into violence. According to local sources, the mob overwhelmed security personnel, set parts of the station ablaze, and attacked officers. In the melee, the DPO, who was attempting to calm the situation, was fatally injured.
The police spokesperson in Kano, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, confirmed the attack and the DPO’s death, describing it as a "heinous act" against law enforcement. He said investigations were underway to determine the circumstances surrounding both the detainee’s death and the violent retaliation that followed.
“We will not let this go unanswered. Those responsible for the death of our officer and the destruction of government property will face the full wrath of the law,” Kiyawa stated.
The Inspector-General of Police has also been briefed and has ordered an immediate deployment of tactical units to restore calm in the area. Meanwhile, several individuals have been arrested in connection with the riot.
The incident has raised renewed concerns about human rights abuses and police accountability in Nigeria, especially regarding the treatment of detainees. Civil society groups are calling for a transparent investigation and the swift release of an autopsy report on the deceased youth.
As of this report, heavy police presence remains in Gwale and surrounding areas, with residents urged to remain calm and avoid any further escalation.
