Aba, Nigeria — A devastating tragedy struck on Tuesday afternoon in Aba, Abia State, as a massive iron billboard structure collapsed near the bustling GIA Event Centre, close to Salad Market along the Aba–Owerri Road. The horrific incident has reportedly left scores of people feared dead, with many others trapped in crushed tricycles (Keke NAPEPs).
Eyewitnesses at the scene describe a horrifying sight — the billboard, which towered above the busy junction, suddenly came crashing down during what locals say was a brief but violent windstorm. Several commercial tricycles packed with passengers were caught directly beneath the structure.
Emergency responders had yet to fully arrive at the time of reporting, but locals and volunteers were seen using crude tools and bare hands in frantic efforts to rescue those still pinned under the wreckage. The chaotic scene was worsened by heavy traffic, panicked crowds, and the screams of bystanders trying to reach their loved ones.
A broadcast from Enyimba 94.3 FM Aba, which first reported the incident, confirmed that multiple fatalities are feared. The exact number of casualties is still unknown, but the scale of destruction points to a significant loss of life and serious injuries.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement, but concerns are already being raised about the safety and regulation of large advertising structures within urban centers like Aba.
This is a developing story. More updates to follow as rescue operations continue.
